Structure of Canoeing in the UK
GB Canoeing is a division of the National Governing Sports Body the British Canoe Union. The British Canoe Union (BCU) comprises of two distinct operating divisions;
GB Canoeing which is responsible for our GB Teams (Olympic and Non Olympic), liaison with the International and European Canoe Federations and the Development of the UK Coaching Framework and Coaching Awards and
Canoe England the membership body for canoeists, clubs, centres and associates in England.
The British Canoe Union also represents the federal membership organisations of the home nations, including:
Canoe Wales, Scottish Canoe Association, Canoe Association of Northern Ireland.
The British Canoe Union was established in 1936 with the remit of sending a GB team to the Berlin Olympics.
Since then, the organisation and canoeing as a whole has grown considerably.
Canoeing continues to be the most popular and fastest growing watersport in the UK, with over 1.25 million participants taking part each year.
